The article focuses on the victory of a colt named Angle Light in New York's Wood Memorial, the final major eastern test for three-year-old colts hoping to qualify to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby in Louisville on May 5, 1973. Angle Light upset his stable-mate and Kentucky Derby favorite Secretariat who only finished third place. Santa Anita Derby winner Sham placed second. Issues facing the participation of Angle Light in Kentucky Derby is also noted.
