Further Evidence on Racial Discrimination in Home Purchase

The household's decision to purchase a home rather than rent has been the focus of three recent studies--by Fredland [1974] for the Philadelphia-Trenton area in 1960, by Kain and Quigley [1975] for the St. Louis area in 1967, and by Roistacher and Goodman [1976] for a national urban sample in 1971. These studies improve previous econometric efforts by considering the household's position in its life cycle and by focusing on the conditional probability of purchase, given a residential move. Tam [1975] has criticized these authors for ignoring the possible interaction effects between race and other socioeconomic factors. The purpose of this paper is to provide further evidence on racial discrimination in the housing market by obtaining comparative estimates of the effect of race on the probability of home purchase, taking account of these interaction effects, using data from a third metropolitan area, San Francisco.
