ABSTRACT
The article features boxer Leon Spinks, who became heavyweight champion of the world after defeating Muhammad Ali. Spinks grew up in the ghettos of Saint Louis, Missouri where he experienced his friend being killed, becoming a drug addict and going to jail. A neighbor in the housing project where they lived took him to his first boxing lessons, and eventually he and his brother, Mike, entered amateur tournaments, where he would always win. His encounter with boxing promoter Butch Lewis is highlighted.
