ABSTRACT
The article compares the uniqueness of a master's painting as a work of art against modern industrial production of things that are endless copies of each other. It says that appreciating a work of art is like having a conversation with the artist himself, something that is not usually done with mechanically produced items. It describes how careers of painters such as Nicolas Poussin and Richard Diebenkorn are understood by presenting their works of art as a narrative of their personal style's development.
