ABSTRACT
The article focuses on cave explorer Steve Lewis' call for the conservation and preservation of karstlands in Southeast Alaska, which is claimed the home of the deepest limestone pit in the U.S. It states that karstlands are areas of water-soluble bedrock and they form in limestone. It notes that when Lewis and fellow cavers explored Southeast Alaska's karst, they noticed the destruction wrought by clearcuts. It mentions the establishment of the Tongass Cave Project to protect karst.
