ABSTRACT
The article reports on the study conducted by the U.S. Congressional Budget Office (CBO) titled "Using Biofuel Tax Credits to Achieve Energy and Environmental Policy Goals," which shows that the volumetric ethanol excise tax credit (VEETC) given to producers and blenders of alternative fuels, particularly corn-based ethanol, are more costly to the taxpayers than their environmental and energy-security-related benefits. The opinion of Senator Jeff Bingaman on the report is also cited.
