Counterproductive Work Behavior: Can It Sometimes Be Good to Be Bad?

The article reports on a study which investigated the hidden benefits of ostensibly counterproductive work behaviors. The study, "Can counterproductive work behaviors be productive? CWB as emotion-focused coping," by Mindy Krischer, Lisa Penney, and Emily Hunter, was published in the "Journal of Occupational Health Psychology." It found that employees tend to adopt strategies of withdrawal or production deviance to cope with perceived organizational injustice on the distributive or procedural levels. A rise in such behaviors can serve as a red flag to management.
