We use the ponderomotive potential of the RF field to study the motion of ions in an RF gun. We apply this method to the BNL 1/2-cell SRF photogun and demonstrate that a significant portion of the ions produced in the gun can reach the cathode if no special precautions are taken. Also, we...

Using a novel technique for real-time transverse beam profile diagnostics of a stored ion beam, we have observed the transverse size of a stored, laser-cooled ion beam. Earlier we observed that the density of the beam is independent of the beam current. At very low currents we observe an abrupt...

With focused ion-beam irradiation it is possible to engineer the anisotropy of magnetic films on nanometer length scales. We used this technique to write square lattices of artificial domain-wall pinning centers in a perpendicular anisotropy GdFe film displaying a well-defined stripe domain...

The NA60 experiment takes place at the SPS at CERN, to study the production of open charm and prompt dimuons in collisions induced by proton and heavy ion beams on nuclear targets. For this task, several novel detector systems were added to the dimuon spectrometer and zero-degree calorimeter,...

We have found that controlled Ar ion bombardment enhances the degradation of a-Si:H based surface passivation of c-Si surfaces. The decrease in the level of surface passivation is found to be independent on the ion kinetic energy (7-70 eV), but linearly proportional to the ion flux...

At the University of Frankfurt, a high current H- ion source was developed and tested. A H- beam current of 120 mA with an energy of 35 keV was extracted using an emission opening radius of 5 mm. This source was equipped with a diode extraction system. Thus, the extraction voltage determines the...
