Group Filial Therapy

The article discusses an expansion of a group filial therapy model for dysfunctioning in children. Filial therapy treats developmental and emotional dysfunctioning in children by making direct use of the parent-child relationship. Generally, parents have been trained in filial therapy to carry out play therapy while they are alone with their child. The innovative kind of therapy carried out by the authors evolved from a play therapy group into a graining program for parents. The six children included for therapy were from lower-class background and were in first grade of a local elementary school. The parents were given a training manual for filial therapy prior to the group's first meeting. The program's therapeutic efforts resembled standard filial therapy but used the format of group play therapy. The group sessions were beneficial for the majority of the youngsters. When the group's sessions were finished, the children had begun to interact with their peers and engage in cooperative play.
