The article features the specifications for Siemens' Velaro D train platform, which compared well with Deutsche Bahn AG's requirements for a four-system multiple units suitable for international operations. The 15 trains had to accommodate around 420 seats and endure crush loads up to 150% of nominal capacity. Siemens has redesigned the end vehicles' bodyshell to satisfy crashworthiness requirements. It is noted that improvements have been made to the aerodynamics of the Velaro platform.
