Utopia in small scale - female escapism into miniature

The article presents a historical and sociological examination into the popular collection of doll houses by women since the 16th century. A brief overview of the history of doll houses is presented, noting their emergence in Germany and growing popularity throughout Europe in the following years. The author asserts that the initial popularity of the hobby related to methods of escapism in women, suggesting that women used the smaller fictional form of depicting home to reorder their ideals of identity and family life.
