ABSTRACT
The article discusses the study by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) on the Department of Defense's (DOD) billion-dollar spending on weapons systems in the U.S. GAO reviews the operating and support (OS) costs of major systems under the Weapon Systems Acquisition Reform Act of 2009 and finds that DOD lacks vital information needed to effectively manage and reduce OS costs. GAO recommends for the DOD's retention of life-cycle OS cost estimates and documentation of program changes.
