The article discusses the decline of interpersonal relationships, specifically friendship, in the U.S. The author references the three types of friendship observed by Greek philosopher Aristotle, including the highest level that is the shared pursuit of virtue. The author examines how online social networks have affected interactions in the real world. The author cites research that has revealed that friendships are becoming less meaningful. Research on loneliness is also discussed.
