ABSTRACT
The article discusses the history of the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Paris, France, an elite college for teacher training whose origins date to 1794. The courses of study are reviewed and famous graduates noted, such as biologist Louis Pasteur, philosophers Jean-Paul Sartre and Michel Foucault, and writer Simone de Beauvoir. The parallel history of the school's twelve libraries is also recounted.
