ABSTRACT
The article describes the case of a community-acquired oseltamivir-resistant pandemic influenza virus A (H1N1) infection in a two-year old boy in Israel reported in 2009. Real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) confirmed the child to have pandemic H1N1 infection. Results of DNA sequence analysis of the neuraminidase gene revealed the presence of a mixed population of wild-type and mutant H1N1 virus with resistance to oseltamivir.

We found that the sensitivities of 3 rapid influenza antigen tests for pandemic influenza A/H1N1 virus were low to moderate: BD Directigen EZ Flu A+B test (Becton Dickinson), 46.7%; BinaxNOW Influenza A&B (Inverness Medical), 38.3%; and QuickVue Influenza A+B Test (Quidel), 53.3%. A patient with...

Rapid tests for diagnosis of influenza are valuable assets in the management of influenza in pediatric patients. However, test performance fluctuates with virus subtypes. We assessed the test characteristics of Influenzatop, a rapid immunochromatographic influenza A and B test, in detecting...

The article reports on the emerging resistance to oseltamivir, a neuraminidase inhibitor used for treatment of H1N1 influenza. It states that people at-risk for severe influenza illness must receive immunization to prevent the occurrence of disease. It says that if patients do not show clinical...
