The article discusses premature ovarian failure (POF) as a syndrome that occurs in women under 40 years old and involves several diseases including elevated gonadotrophins, sex steroid deficiency, and amenorrhoea. It states that there is inadequacy in the availability of standardized diagnostic criteria for POF which may result to inefficient diagnosis and management of long-term and immediate effects. The occurrence of early menopause has reportedly an impact on women's cardiovascular system. The article also offers information on the impact of POF on women's sexual function, cognitive function, and subfertility.
