The article reports on the efforts of Japanese rolling stock manufacturers to expand their export activities given the poor sales and declining orders in the domestic market. Kawasaki has received orders to supply more rolling stock cars for New York following its selection as preferred supplier of trains for the Washington, D.C. metro railway line. Another effort is the promotion of the Shinkansen technology by JR Central for the U.S. high speed rail program. Kasai is also pushing the use of superconducting maglev technology.
