ABSTRACT
The article reports on a new tax package signed into law by Washington Governor Christine O. Gregoire. The measure includes 780 million dollars in new or increased taxes created to avoid deeper statewide cuts in human services, health care and education caused by the current 2.8 billion dollars budget deficit. Under the bill, consumers will pay more for beer and cigarettes. In addition, bottled water, candy and gum will subject to state sales tax effective June 1, 2010.
