ABSTRACT
In this article the author examines how the look of an index on a printed page affects usability. The article developed from talks the author has given on indexing at venues in the United States, Canada and Australia. It is noted that indexing is an amalgam of adherence to rules and creative thinking on the part of the indexer. A number of topics are addressed including the use of prepositions in indexing, indentation in indexes, and text styling issues and capitalization. Also explored are client guidelines, type size, and color use in indexes.
