ABSTRACT
In this article the authors discuss the development of the "Kaunokki" archive of Finnish fiction in 1996 and its subsequent development into an Internet service for readers and librarians. The authors examine the methods employed for fiction retrieval before the computer era and discuss the need to develop fiction indexing tools suitable for use on the Internet. A number of other topics are addressed including the relevance of fiction to library users, problems of user motivation, and challenges for the future.
