ABSTRACT
The article profiles singer and actress Dorothy Jean Dandridge. She is considered to be Hollywood's first authentic African American sex symbol. But it is noted that her successful career and renowned fame was overshadowed by the heartbreaking tragedies of her life which include two failed marriages, an abortion, a child who suffered brain damage, a floundering career capped with bad investment and bankruptcy. Just when she was rebounding from these misfortunes, she died on November 19, 1965 due to an overdose of the antidepressant Tofranil.
