Generation of short millimeter-wave radio pulses using solitons in ferrite-based active rings

A method of generation of short high-power radio pulses at millimeter-wave frequencies is proposed. It uses pulsed self-generation in an active ring structure consisting of a wide-band millimeter-wave amplifier and a delay line, based on a highly anisotropic hexagonal ferrite film. The ring structure is operated in the nonlinear regime allowing self-generation of a periodic train of short soliton-like millimeter-wave radio pulses. The pulse power (P∼1.7 kW) and duration (τ∼2 ns) in the train are determined by the amplifier gain and the parameters of the hexaferrite film, while the period between pulses is determined by the time delay in the active ring. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
