ABSTRACT
The article discusses political battles over the rights of illegal immigrants to the U.S. Rallies held in 2006 in cities such as Chicago, Illinois and Los Angeles, California, are said to indicate a change in the political mood of illegal immigrants and their supporters, in response to a perception of increased hostility. The passage of ordinances and laws regarding illegal aliens, political calls for building a secure wall along the U.S.-Mexican border, and the Minute Men Project, which involved civilian policing of the border, are cited as evidence of growing intolerance of U.S. immigration law violations. The intersection of illegal immigrant rights with gay rights and the political influence of religious organizations are also analyzed.
