Impact of Presentation Mode on Recall of Written Text and Numerical Information: Hard Copy Versus Electronic

This research compared the influence of hard copy to electronic visual presentation of both written text and numerical data on memory. In Experiment 1, participants were block randomly assigned into one of three conditions (electronic copy, hard copy, control), studied a paragraph of written text, engaged in a distractor task, and responded to an objective measure of recall. In Experiment 2, following a similar procedure, participants were presented with numerical data after being block randomly assigned into one of six conditions, created by crossing two levels of presentation mode (electronic, hard copy) with three levels of presentation form (graph, table, paragraph). Across both studies, results revealed no significant difference in the impact of hard copy versus electronic copy on recall performance. While this finding is consistent with prior research involving non-numerical text, it extends the findings to previously unaddressed numerical information.
