ABSTRACT
The article discusses how U.S. community bankers can fix asset-quality problems and finance expansion when the economy recovers. It is suggested by Julie Stackhouse, the senior vice president of supervision at the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, Missouri, that small banks should consider merging with other small banks to increase the technology needed to handle regulatory compliance. The opportunity for small banks to make more loans since fewer are made by bigger banks is discussed.
