ABSTRACT
The article traces the history of online search engine Google's entry in the social networking business. Google launched its first social networking Web site, Orkut, in January 2004. The author compares Orkut with other social networking sites, like Facebook and MySpace, and asserts that applications are features of social networking sites that can explain why one site is favored over another. The functions of Google's Social Search are also explained.
