ABSTRACT
The article details the research conducted by Jenna Jambeck and her team at the University of New Hampshire on how microbial fuel cells (MFC) could be used in the solid waste industry. The research team used leachate as a substrate for MFC because of its high amount of organics, conductivity and buffering capacity, and the minimal presence of solids. One of the key findings of the research is that significant reductions in chemical oxygen demand (COD)/biological oxygen demand (BOD) and ammonium can occur.
