ABSTRACT
The article discusses interpretation of results from multiscore batteries. A profile of a person's scores, showing high and low points, strengths and weaknesses, is more informative than a single global score, such as an IQ or some overall estimate of emotional well being. Comparability of scores can be best attained from a multitrait battery standardized on a single normative population. Without adequate attention to the conditions that must be met for proper profile interpretation, the results of multiscore batteries may prove useless or misleading. These conditions center principally on subscore reliability and error of measurement, significance of subscore differences, intercorrelation of subscores and differential validity. In the assessment of ability and personality variables, multiscore instruments offer potential advantages in so far as they permit the identification of strengths and weaknesses in the individual. To yield meaningful results, however, such instruments must meet certain minimum statistical requirements pertaining principally to reliability and intercorrelation of subscores and to differential validity of score patterns. The standard error of measurement of interscore differences is an essential requirement for the proper use of multiscore instruments.
