ABSTRACT
The article discusses a study from the Center for Teaching and Policy at the University of Washington which examined leadership by urban school principals. Successful schools shifted the principal's role from sole instructional leader to team-based approaches using teacher leaders. It recommends skills that principal preparation programs should teach, including connecting with the larger context of the community, district and state, mastering data, and developing instructional leadership in others.
