ABSTRACT
The article reports on the need for rating agencies to be cautious on mandatory financial strength ratings as a tool. Credit rating agencies bear a conflict of interest because they are being paid by the sellers instead of the buyers of the products that they rate, which could influence the ratings they offer. There is also a tendency for consumers to misunderstand ratings information and presume more than aimed concerning market risk.
