The article features the projected growth of hybrid, medium- and heavy-duty trucks in North America by 2012 due to fuel savings by as much as 20%, achievable in three years. It is stated that electrical hybrids have high energy storage and auxiliary power and that hydraulic hybrids have high power density for a shorter time. A hybrid system's improvement of the braking and acceleration of a vehicle and its lessening of environmental impact and of driver distraction are also indicated.
