ABSTRACT
The article discusses the origin and management of Dehesa forests and woodlands in the Southwestern Iberian Peninsula. The characteristics of Dehesa are given including its need to be taken care of and its capability to transform the ecosystem. Dehesa has various layers of vegetation including the tree canopy layer, the grassland layer, and the survival of plants in autumn. Also included are the etymology of the word dehesa, the reason that evergreen oaks and some other oaks were left in good grazing land, and how the Dehesa was created.
