The article focuses on Quercus schumardii Buckl. var. acerifolia Palmer also known as Maple leaf oak, which was included in the "Report on Endangered and Threatened Plant Species of the United States" in the category of Threatened Species. The single known locality for the specie is within the Ozark National Forest in Arkansas. The shape of the acorn cupule is the key morphological feature separating var. shumardii from var. schneckii.
