ABSTRACT
The article focuses on ways to identify hybrid oaks, especially in the forests of eastern North America. It illustrates instances of hybridization that are restricted to taxa within a section. It cites the causes of erroneous claims of hybridization such as the misunderstanding of the origin of the specimen in question. The use of scatter diagrams and the hybrid index are some of the classic approaches used in documenting the presence of hybrids.
