ABSTRACT
The article reports on cases of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in young children in the U.S. in 2007 before approval of 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. It is noted that the disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae remains the top cause of serious illness among adults and children all over the world. In the year 2006-2007, 301 cases of children between 24-59 months with IPD with a known serotype were reported.
