The Navy's First POW Hero

The article profiles U.S. Navy Lieutenant Edouard Izac, recipient of the Medal of Honor for his heroism as a prisoner of war (POW) in Germany. Born in Iowa in 1891, he learned the German language from his parents which became beneficial to him during his capture in 1918. While aboard the German military submarine U-90, he obtained critical information from his German captors and made several efforts to escape when he was placed in a POW camp. He finally had a chance to report the information he learned from his captors on November 11, 1918.
