ABSTRACT
The article examines the oversight of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on generally recognized as safe (GRAS) substances, by the Government Accountability Office (GAO). It was found that its oversight process does not ensure the safety of GRAS determinations. The agency does not issue guidance to companies on how to document their GRAS determinations. The FDAS's regulation of nanotechnology is discussed.
