However, after being afflicted by rheumatoid arthritis, he specialized in ophthalmology and became a devotee of Indian philosopher Sri Aurobindo. He also worked as the head of the ophthalmology department at a government hospital. After his retirement, he founded Aravind Eye Care to eliminate blindness from India.
