ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the Cuban popular dance music which evoked regionalism. It states that while the Western and Central Cuba had economic growth, Eastern Cuba faced poverty. It discusses how the Spanish, who were ruling Cuba, provoked hatred among the Blacks, and how the economic inequality and racialism led to the growth of regionalism. It discusses the role of president Fidel Castro in the national unity. It highlights how the people from Eastern Cuba were interrogated and harassed by the police. It discusses the regionalist sentiment reflected in songs, "La Habana no aguanta más," by performer Los Van Van, "Soy Cubano y soy de Oriente," by dance band Orquesta Original de Manzanillo, and "Un pariente en el campo," by performer Adalberto Álvarez.
