ABSTRACT
The article discusses the report "Medicaid Managed Care Cost Savings--A Synthesis of 24 Studies," from The Lewin Group in Falls Church, Virginia. The report analyzed studies to determine the savings achieved when states have implemented private Medicaid health plans. Drug costs and changing patterns in unnecessary inpatient utilization are cited as two factors affecting cost savings. According to Joel Menges, lead author of the report, the studies were consistent in finding positive outcomes. He cites ways plans can achieve savings.
