ABSTRACT
This article focuses on the emergence of the French Left as a potent political actor in France. The Left in France had been unable to make important influence on the country's political life in the face of Gaullist or conservative rulers. But over the years, the Left has achieved an intellectual, programmatic and a popular rebirth that is sure to upset the rules of the French and European political game. The membership of the Socialist Party has doubled over the last five years and its political and economic program has taken a new form while the Communist Party has also changed its orientation away from Soviet Union. This development has far reaching impact on French politics and on the international communist movement as well.
