ABSTRACT
This article examines a profound and lasting economic and political crisis being experienced by France as of April 1977. While France is, so to speak, one of the founding countries of representative or parliamentary democracy, the role of the various elected assemblies has been reduced to practically nothing. The result is that the gap between the state and the citizenry has widened. Things are no more satisfactory in the economic field. After some delay in business concentration, French capitalism redoubled its efforts in the last 20 years and now about 25 large private groups dominate the economic life of the country.
