ABSTRACT
The article focuses on American rangelands and grasslands, and savannahs worldwide that are being replaced by woody vegetation and desert-like ground cover as of 2010. It cites potential factors that contribute to such conversions, including climate changes. Plant ecologist Steve Archer notes the negative effect of shrubs that move in and take over grasses on wildlife, like prairie-chickens and sharp-tailed grouse, whose declines have been associated to shrub encroachment. He stresses the need to protect those species as well as their ecosystems.
