ABSTRACT
The article focuses on the effort of Peter Laing, manager of the Castlepoint Station in the Wairarapa region in New Zealand, to plant radiata pine trees in the station to protect the soils from erosion. He also planted Tasmanian blackwood in the perimeter of the station as he believed that there should be some experimentation with other timber trees besides pine. It cites the possible benefits of forestry to the station with the introduction of the Emission Trading Scheme.
