ABSTRACT
The article discusses efforts by U.S. banks to modify loans of struggling mortgagees. Bank of America Corp. has modified almost 500,000 loans. Redelinquency rates for Fifth Third Bancorp's modifications have begun to decline from initially high levels. Key challenges include determining which borrowers are most apt to benefit from modification, and devising options for those who don't qualify.
