In 2009, the bank reached 170 billion U.S. dollars in deal volume and was able to dominate both the middle and small markets too. A private equity professional traces the roots of Goldman's mergers and acquisitions (M&A) business to the middle market. According to Tim Ingrassia of Goldman, there is a tendency to overlook the company's efforts in the middle market. He adds that almost half of the companys' mid-market mandates involve divestitures.
