ABSTRACT
The article discusses Michael Finnissy's oratorio "The Transgressive Gospel," which Finnissy performed at Wilton's Music Hall in June, 2009. He first got the idea for the oratorio in 1968 after an impromptu encounter with a priest of the Greek Orthodox Church. It is based on St. Mark's Gospel and, in the author's view, does an impressive job of making the Gospel's narrative accessible via words and music. The oratorio has three parts. The Wilton Music Hall performance featured the baritone voice of Richard Jackson sometimes reaching a high falsetto.
