ABSTRACT
The article discusses the securities that offer an alternative to fixed-income common stock and securities. It notes that real estate investment trusts (REITs) are the most popular way to get exposure to the real estate market outside of owning a personal residence that comes in three general types which include equity, mortgage and hybrid involving investments in both mortgages and property. It explains that in master limited partnerships (MLPs), ownership is traded as "units" rather than shares to reflect the nature of the legal structure of the business, however, most MLPs are in oil related business.
