ABSTRACT
The article provides a linguistic analysis of the epitaphs found on gravestones located in the English East India Company Cemetery in Macao, China. The author connects these epitaphs to the process of enculturation and the use of Western mortuary rituals within China. After explaining the history of foreigners in South China between 1557 and 1842, the author goes on to distinguish between the Biblical and literary inscriptions found on the gravestones. He analyzes the grammar found on the gravestones and references to human sentiment, along with verb forms and sentence structures.
