The article provides an overview on the purpose of retraction. It suggests that retraction can only be considered by journal editors if they have clear evidence that the findings are unreliable, either as a result of misconduct or honest error. It indicates that retraction is a mechanism for correcting the literature and alerting readers to publications that contain erroneous data that their findings can not be relied on.
